Carlos Santana "Black Magic Woman" (video)

Classic groove to while away the afternoon...

What is your opinion of the internet?

The internet has revealed the dark places in humanity's spirit and activities; however, as it was wisely once said, it is not until you acknowledge something that it can be healed. The internet has also provided the means for compassionate, intelligent individuals to work together to form a force for positive change.

What do you think are the pro's and con's of the internet?

When you support a company, or research, that tests on animals...

this is what you are supporting! Know where your shopping dollars, or donation dollars, are being spent, and you can help to stop this absolutely horrendous, inhumane treatment of poor, innocent animals; animals which spend their entire lives suffering in pain and fear until their death caused by experiments, or killed after the data has been collected, and often, not even a humane death. (See the photo below)

During the Second World War, Nazi's tested on humans, using the most despicable research to "acquire knowledge". Now humanity encourages the breeding and capturing of animals from the wild to be used in horrific experiments that only serve to show that we have not progressed if we consider achieving our goals by ANY MEANS justifies abhorrent cruelty. There are efficient, faster, viable alternatives, but while billions of dollars are being made by companies involved in the breeding, capturing, and scientific torturing of animals, and enormous amounts of money made by companies that sell the food and equipment for lab animals, this will continue. While ignorance that animal testing is justified, this barbaric situation will continue. Be a force of good and buy only products that are not tested on animals, donate only to those charities that specify that they will test on animals, and we can halt this practice in our lifetime.

Can you imagine the amount of suffering and fear this poor bunny is enduring? And this is only one example of the MILLIONS of animals that are used in research each year. Can this be classified as science or a horror film come to life? Check out this link.

In the UK alone - each day these animals die in research labs - Mice 7342 per day - one every 12 seconds; Fish 1545 per day - one every 56 seconds; Rats 744 per day - one every 1.9 minutes; Birds 466 per day - one every 3 minutes; Sheep 103 per day - one every 14 minutes; Rabbits 42 per day - one every 34 minutes; Amphibians
44 per day - one every 33 minutes; Guinea Pigs 32 per day - one every 46 minutes;
Dogs 12 per day - one every 115 minutes; Primates 7 per day - one every 3 1/2 hours;
Hamster 5 per day - one every 4 hours; Cattle 14 per day - one every 1 hour 43 minutes; Pigs 12 per day - one every 2 hours; Gerbils and other rodents
11 per day - one every 2 hours 15 minutes; Reptiles one every 23 hours; Cats
one every 37 hours. (In the US, many more animals die each day in constant pain and fear.)

A beautiful video of dogs saved from Michael Vick convicted dog torturerer and killer

This gorgeous video shows how some dogs rescued from the horrific, brutal treatment of Michael Vick, went on to lives of nurturing and love. These happy dogs and their wonderful pet parents reveal how light can find its way out of the darkness. They all look so very happy! Truly inspiring!

It has been revealed recently that Michael Vick has now purchased another dog, although there could be more than one if he has hidden them like he did with the other dogs he previously tortured and killed. It is unbelievable, and reprehensible, that authorities have allowed a convicted dog torturer and murderer to own other dogs. Michael Vick was recently been awarded Sportsman of the Year in the US and granted substantial football contracts worth millions of dollars. Those that support and encourage this cruel man, and his terrible treatment of animals, bear the same shame and guilt as Michael Vick, for they are helping to reward and perpetuate barbarism towards innocent animals.

But back to the video which is joy to watch, GMP wishes all pictured a long, joyful, safe and loving life together! And thank you to those who have saved these beautiful dogs and made their lives one of heaven on earth! Huzzah! :)

Captive Whale Tried To Talk Like Humans

Story by Kristina Chew. NOC was the name of a white whale caught off the Pacific coast of Canada in 1977. Until his death five years ago, NOC lived in an open-air tank at the US National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego, along with a group of dolphins; he also socialized with two female white whales. In 1984, NOC started talking with a human voice.

You can hear NOC speaking via the Guardian and the Independent.

Before realizing that NOC was talking, the scientists thought they heard the sound of people chatting as if at a distance and “just out of range for our understanding,” from a tank that held whales and dolphins. As noted in Current Biology (pdf), the scientists heard these “conversations” several times before tracing them to NOC:

The whale was exposed to speech not only from humans at the surface — it was present at times when divers used surface-to-diver communication equipment… The whale was recognized as the source of the speech-like sounds when a diver surfaced outside this whale’s enclosure and asked “Who told me to get out?” Our observations led us to conclude the “out” which was repeated several times came from NOC.

NOC was seeking to mimic human voices, the scientists say. They recorded NOC’s sounds both when he was underwater and when he surfaced for the next several years.

An acoustic analysis revealed that NOC’s human voice was several octaves below typical whale sounds which include echolocation clicks and whistles (that are actually fast vibrations). The scientists “trained” NOC to speak when they requested him to do so. They also figured out how he produced human sounds, by adjusting the pressure and blowing air through his nose rather than through his larynx as humans do.

After four years, when NOC reached his maturity, he stopped making the human sounds, perhaps because he lost either the interest or the ability. He did remain “quite vocal,” the scientists say, producing echolocation pulses and also “various pulse burst sounds previously described as ‘squawks, rasps, yelps or barks.’”

What was so remarkable about NOC’s sounds was that he made them spontaneously, without any human instigation. The scientists note other examples of white whales producing sounds resembling human speech,

The first to study white whale (Delphinapterus leucas) sounds in the wild, Schevill and Lawrence [3] wrote that “occasionally the calls would suggest a crowd of children shouting in the distance”. Fish and Mowbary [4] described sound types and reviewed past descriptions of sounds from this vociferous species. At Vancouver Aquarium, Canada, keepers suggested that a white whale about 15 years of age, uttered his name “Lagosi”. Other utterances were not perceptible, being described as “garbled human voice, or Russian, or similar to Chinese” by R.L. Eaton in a self-published account in 1979.

I’ve listened to the recordings quite a few times: it is uncanny, wondrous and poignant to hear the voice of NOC.

In his many years living among humans, was NOC trying to “make contact”? What motivated him to start, and to stop, talking in a human voice — did he conclude that the effort to speak the way humans did was not worth it?

When NOC said, as the diver reported, “out,” was he trying to tell the scientists what he wanted? Article courtesy of - care2.com - http://www.care2.com/causes/captive-whale-talk-like-humans.html#ixzz2AUqUIZC7

Petition Target: NOAA Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Fisheries Russel Smith - Sponsored by: Care2.com

When you're upwards of 15 feet long and accustomed to living in the ocean, a tank for a home just isn't going to cut it.

Unfortunately, 18 beluga whales originally from the waters of Sakhalin Island await that very fate. They currently reside in a Russian tank while Georgia Aquarium seeks permission to place them in park attractions, where they would interact with untrained humans.

The Georgia Aquarium has said that the marine parks need the belugas for education, research, and breeding to enhance diversity within the endangered species.

But capturing beluga whales destroys their family groups. These particular belugas normally migrate and dive up to 1,000 feet below sea level to find food. Tanks just do not allow them to live normally.

Friday, Oct. 19th marks the first hearing for this permit, which will eventually be decided on next year.

Tell NAOO to turn down the permit that would allow for the import of beluga whales!

Bill and Lou ...

Update: In Memory of Bill and Lou. It is ten years since both have passed, but we felt this article was worth keeping to remind us that standing up for the protection of innocent animals is still incredibly important.

"Bill and Lou are still set for slaughter by the end of October!! We still may be able to save their lives, and send them to the Vine Sanctuary who want to provide a safe loving home for the rest of their lives, with one last push.

Bill and Lou worked tirelessly for ten years, helping the farm maintain its sustainable goals, but now, despite thousands of people signing a petition to save them from slaughter, the Green Mountain College has sentenced their long term farm workers, who happen to be oxen, to death.

For years, Bill and Lou were a near daily sight out in the fields at Green Mountain College. Bill and Lou's big brown eyes, their curving horns and gentle, but massive girth have made them minor celebrities on campus and beyond. Many say that's what makes it so hard to believe that the college wants to slaughter and eat them. Miriam Jones is co-founder of Vine, an animal sanctuary in Springfield. "These two individuals have become veritable mascots for the school," she says. "They are the profile picture on the farm's Facebook page. They are known by name." She says "this is why the outcry has been so significant all over."
Vine offered to transport Bill and Lou for free to their farm to live with other rescued animals. Vine's Pattrice Jones, says they were stunned when the college said no and cited sustainability as one of its reasons. "We do not believe that the way to conserve resources is to kill the elderly and disabled," she says; "to prevent them from using up resources because they're not useful anymore. We just find that ethically repugnant."

BILL and LOU are gentle sweet boys that don't deserve the cruelty that the GMC ( GREEN MOUNTAIN COLLEGE ) want to inflict upon them by sending them to slaughter, then feeding them to the schools students in their Cafeteria! Sounds like a family who decide they want to be sustainable by eating their pet dog or cat!! When we have a choice between "sustainability" and compassion, compassion should win every time.
VINE Sanctuary in Vermont have offered the boys are new loving home, so why doesn't GMC not let them go? Are they just trying to prove a point at the expense of their compassion and humanity?

"They (Bill and Lou) would plow and cultivate, and spread their manure and the manure of other animals," said Ben Dube, a research assistant.
The oxen are part of the farm's plan to be fossil-free. Instead of tractors, Bill and Lou do the work. But this summer, Lou suffered an injury and can barely walk. And Bill can't pull the plow alone. "Doing any work with them is a question. Even putting them in the yoke and not pulling anything," Dube said. The school already bought replacements, but kept Bill and Lou as pets until they could collaborate with the students, who were on summer break, about Bill and Lou's fate.
"Because it is an educational, sustainable farm, we think we've got to help students understand how to make farms work ecologically, socially and economically," said Bill Throop, the provost at Green Mountain College.

The consensus: to slaughter Bill and Lou for meat. This would save the school from purchasing meat from a factory for at least a month.
(GMP Publisher: Sustainability is an admirable goal, but in this case, it is at the sacrifice of our humanity and compassion, and not a worthy choice. These animals have helped to make the farm sustainable for ten years. Haven't Bill and Lou earned their lives and a little respect?)
__________________________

VINE Sanctuary is ready to take these animals in for a peaceful life after all their contribution to their human owners. And despite many voices from around the world calling for the release of Bill and Lou to the sanctuary, the college authorities have remained determined to send the two retiring oxen to slaughter.
Indeed this heartless decision makes no sense because no one is starving at the college hall and these hard workers who shared the workload of their human companions on their back now deserve to live their natural life, whatever of it is left, in peace.

Below is an excerpt from a recent article about Bill and Lou from the New York Times here (With comments like the ones below, you have to wonderful how evolved, or indeed, how compassionate and ethical, some people of this world are? So when someone has outlived their usefulness at GMC, do they recycle their body parts? Maybe the retiring professors at GMC should be a little nervous! Soylent Green burgers anyone?!)

“It’s about sustainability, and I’ve been a vegetarian for three years, but I’m excited to eat Bill and Lou,” said Lisa Wilson, a senior. “I eat meat when I know where it comes from.” (GMP Publisher: Obviously this student doesn't know that an oxen is not a vegetable? That doesn't sound they are teaching them the difference at GMC? This girl certainly doesn't understand that she is NOT a vegetarian if she is excited to eat meat!)

Andrew Kohler, a senior, took a course in which he learned how to drive the oxen team.

“They start listening to you, and they become your friend,” Mr. Kohler said. “I feel honored to eat them.” (GMP Publisher: I'm sure the honour would NOT be mutual here. I wonder if Mr. Kohler eats ALL his friends?! Maybe anyone considering befriending him on facebook should rethink the idea?)

Voicing a rare opinion on campus, Lilly Byers, a junior from Albany, joined a group of about 20 protesters who gathered near campus on Friday and faced down a counterprotest of her fellow students. (GMP Publisher: Good for you Lilly!! You go girl!!)

“I come from a family of dairy farmers,” Ms. Byers said. “When you’ve worked an animal this long, they usually go into retirement, so I come to it from that perspective.”

Meanwhile, Emerald Hardiman, a freshman, confronted the protesters.

“Why aren’t you at factory farms right now?” Ms. Hardiman said. “They’re going to taste delicious!” (GMP Publisher: Factory farming is certainly hideous, however Ms Hardiman's statement is also hideous! If poor Bill and Lou are indeed killed, maybe a healthy dose of ongoing indigestion may be a suitable karmic payback, Ms Hardiman?)

104 Rescued Bears Forced Out of Sanctuary and Back into Cages!!

By Jill Robinson, Founder of Animals Asia - We’ve had some shocking news. After working so hard over so many years to build a world-class sanctuary for the bears rescued from Vietnam’s bile farms, we are being asked to leave.

On Friday October 5, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) informed Animals Asia that the Ministry of Defence had issued an order to evict the entire sanctuary operation and its 104 rescued bears. There is no justification for this.

It’s believed the park director, Do Dinh Tien, lobbied the Ministry of Defence to evict Animals Asia, so he can hand the land to Truong Giang Tam Dao Joint Stock Company, of which his daughter is part owner. The company intends to build commercial property including a tourist park and hotels.

The closure would see 104 bears that have been rescued from the bile industry evicted, 77 local Vietnamese staff made unemployed, and financial losses to Animals Asia of more than $2 million.

After years of trauma from being locked up in small cages and milked for their bile, our bears are now enjoying dens, enclosures and friends to play with. These bears will be forced to return to cages to be relocated. This will have a major negative impact on their mental and physical well-being. It is likely to take at least two years to establish a new center with outdoor enclosures. (The bear named Grace pictured above is also blind.)

We’re fighting this eviction notice every step of the way, appealing directly to the Vietnamese authorities, enlisting help from the international community, the media and other NGOs. But most of all we need your help.

Three Ways To Help Now:

Please write to the Prime Minister of Vietnam, and appeal to him to allow Animals Asia’s Vietnam bear sanctuary, which he previously approved and endorsed, to continue operations, and expand, in line with the government’s original agreement.

Step 1. Email Prime Minister Mr Nguyen Tan Dung at nguoiphatngonchinhphu@chinhphu.vn Below is sample text for your email:

Dear Honourable Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng,

I write to express my concern that Animals Asia’s world-class bear sanctuary is to be evicted from Tam Dao National Park by the Ministry of Defence.

The eviction is in direct violation of the Vietnam government’s agreement with Animals Asia, to develop a rescue centre on 12 hectares of the park that would permanently rehabilitate and house 200 endangered bears rescued from the illegal bear bile industry. The closure would see 104 rescued bears evicted, 77 Vietnamese staff made unemployed, and financial losses to Animals Asia of more than US$2 million.

Please overturn the decision to evict Animals Asia and honour your government’s agreement.

Step 2: Share this article on Facebook and Twitter

Step 3: Sign the Petition Below

Considering a "humane" Christmas?

Christmas is a time of celebrations which means food, lots of food, most of which is derived from the suffering and death of animals. The following article focuses on this particular topic of animal welfare and human choice.

CCTV for All Abattoirs in Australia
With Christmas on the horizon, we will be doing lots of posts on Supermarket Facebook pages to encourage shoppers to avoid pork for Christmas (and always). The misery pigs endure for humans to eat roast pork and bacon just isn't worth it. Will you help support our posts when we need you to?

These poor monkeys, like the ones pictured here and above, often endure beatings, have their hands and limbs tied, and endure stifling heat and near suffocation with plastic dolls heads covering their faces to "entertain" the public and make money for the monkey masters.

Ed Wray a famous photographer was terrified the first time he encountered a masked monkey. Having lived and worked in Jakarta as a freelance photographer for years, he was accustomed to seeing the animals, cruelly leashed by chains, jumping through hoops or riding trikes on the sidewalks. But for Wray, the mask was a terrifying twist.

“When I first saw a monkey with a rubber baby doll’s head stuck over its head as a mask, it immediately struck me as horrifying and beyond weird.” Wray said. “Something about the combination of the doll head – which I think is scary looking to begin with – and a long tail just struck a chord in me.”

Shocking to many Westerners, it’s a common sight on the streets of Jakarta. Most Indonesians pass along unfazed or mildly amused and a few give the handlers money. “Whether they feel more sorry for the monkey or handler, I don’t know.” Wray added.
Wray decided to venture past the sidewalk performances and explore where the monkeys lived and how they were trained. “Initially I was purely interested in the masked monkeys,” Wray said. “But once I saw the village and the condition in which the people there lived alongside the monkeys, another grim layer was added to the pictures and to my thinking about the monkeys.”

“The idea came to me that the disturbing image of the monkeys wearing the masks is a visual distillation of the kinds of horrible things that happen when people are driven to desperation by poverty.”

Wray said he was going to continue with the project, adding, “One thing I would definitely like to concentrate on is how the monkeys get to the city from the jungle—the commercial process that brings them into urban areas as pets or performers.”

Misery of Indonesia's monkeys: Chained macaques forced to dress up in doll costumes and ride scooters for tourists attraction ! this has to stop !!! ''Topeng Monyet'', or dancing monkeys, is a particularly cruel practice where juvenile macaques are forced to perform (dance, ride bicycles, wear masks) in the crowded and busy streets of Jakarta. An illegal trade in wild macaques that are captured from the wild !! has built up around the phenomena known as Topeng Monyet. They live in a place called "Monkey Village" and are kept in small cages and in chains. Trainers sometimes hang them upside down or tie their hands on their back to make them go up- straight like you can see on this picture !!

Mary - the seeing eye cow!

We are all familiar with seeing eye dogs, but would you believe that there is a wonderful cow, who wasn't trained for such work, that took on the job of assisting her human friend to "see" when he lost his sight - a role she took on of her own freewill! Now who said cows weren't clever, or compassionate?

For Animals.
Mary, the seeing eye cow. Fate Magazine reported that a Reverend O. F. Robertson of Hartsville,Tennessee, had a seeing-eye cow. The cow in question Mary - became aware that the Reverend's eyesight was failing and began nudging him around the hilly farmland with her nose, making sure he didn't bump into things. As his eyesight worsened, Mary's diligence increased until she would accompany the Reverend whenever he went.Eventually almost totally blind, he depended on Mary the cow as his only help and until his death, the two could be seen making the rounds together, Mary steering him along the countryside.

Starman revives dead deer video!

"A wonderful scene from a beautiful, funny science fiction film about love. An alien lands on Earth to investigate its' life-forms, and encounters an earth woman played by Karen Allen. A cross-country chase ensues as our alien has to meet up with his starship in Arizona. Starman comes in peace and doesn't mean any harm. He doesn't see why humans kill animals so he goes out to the dead deer, draped across the front of a car, and gives it a new life. I suggest you to see the whole movie, Starman."

Giant "Super Trawler" on way to decimate Australian waters! Please sign petition....

..to protect Australian oceanic ecosystem from destruction! This "Super-Trawler - Factory" has already removed fish stocks and sea life from West African waters, and now this trawler is on its way to Australia to do the same. The plan is to remove 1800 tonnes of "target" fish (also killing thousands of tonnes more "waste" or "non-target" fish) from Australian waters between South-East and Western Australia to sell to West Africa whose waters have been emptied by the same super-trawlers! Please help stop the rape of Australian oceans! Add your voice to say no before it's too late!

Senegal has banned super-trawlers after its waters were plundered by these "Oceanic Killer" vessels. This petition is to urge the Australian Government to also ban these huge trawler-factories, before it's too late! Tell the Australian Prime Minister to ban super trawlers from Australian waters! Further articles on this devastating threat to oceanic survival can be found beneath the embedded petition.

UPDATE! Australian Federal Labor Government announced on 11/9/2012 that it intends to ban this vessel from fishing in Australian waters for two years. During that time, further research on the effects of these trawlers on oceanic ecosystems will be acquired. A temporary victory due to public pressure and the petitions signed, but still a significant one! Congratulations to everyone who signed and "shouted loud enough" for the government to hear! But we must remain vigilant to ensure that this super-trawler does not get a chance to wreak havoc with the Australian oceanic ecosystem in two years time!

"Ocean Killer: This 'Super Trawler' Is a 465-Foot Floating Factory Farm" by Elissa Sursara

Fourteen state and national organizations across Australia, including Greenpeace, have partnered to push back against the FV Margiris—a 465-foot fishing vessel encroaching a pristine Australian coastline and targeting vulnerable fish stocks.

"It has a vacuum-like ability to catch and process fish in a maximum capacity—not unlike a floating factory farm."

The Margiris, part of a heavily subsidized European trawler fleet responsible for leaving behind a wake of dead fisheries from Europe to Africa and across the South Pacific, has raised concerns among marine conservationists, charter boat operators, and recreational fishermen who believe that welcoming giant fishing vessels sets a dangerous precedent that Australian waters and beyond are open to exploitive fishing.

One hundred forty two meters in length, the FV Margiris, dubbed by Greenpeace and Environment Tasmania as the ‘scary super trawler,’ is the second largest super trawler in the world. It has a vacuum-like ability to catch and process fish in a maximum capacity—not unlike a floating factory farm. Due to arrive in Tasmanian waters in August, the Margiris will net up to 18,000 tonnes of baitfish for export to Nigeria and parts of Asia for $1 per kilogram for human consumption. The vessel’s primary bait includes small jack mackerel, a species in a critical population state.

In addition, the vessel’s poorly regulated fishing capabilities do not discriminate against larger and often protected marine species like sharks, seals, dolphins, manatees and turtles that can become entangled in trawl nets and are later ejected from the vessel, dead or dying, as “waste products.”

Humans, too, suffer at the hands of trawl vessels like the Margiris. It destroyed important fish stocks in Europe, Africa, and the South Pacific during a recent brutal 18-month period. As a result, the Margiris and all other super trawlers were unanimously banned from operating in the waters off Senegal.

But no such preemptive action has been taken in Australia.

In July 2011, the Australian Government and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) confirmed it was processing the appropriate documents to “hurriedly” approve the controversial Margiris’ entry into Tasmanian waters.

Though AFMA claimed it would apply strict management regulations to the Margiris vessel (should it be granted full permission), conservationists and marine scientists believe the fisheries’ assurances are nothing more than national green washing; they believe the government has failed to propose viable management and regulation schemes and has consistently failed to apply current marine population data to the Magiris’ catch quotas, using only outdated data that, in reality, fails to reflect and safeguard more than five years of fish stock depletion.

But every cloud and fishing vessel has a silver lining.

According to Melbourne-based fisheries expert Malcolm John Moore, citizen- and community-run protest activism can and does influence government decisions, as was the case in Senegal, where, after community protests hit a political nerve, the Margiris was strictly banned.

Later, campaigners from global organizations in 2011 and 2012 confronted the Margiris as it pillaged waters in Mauritania. In early 2012, joint efforts from individuals and organizations obstructed the vessel as it fished in the Netherlands, significantly damaging quotas and calling on the attention of surrounding governments to investigate the vessel’s sustainability.

Further, lobbying and petitioning governing bodies to end subsidies and other financial assistance for destructive fishing vessels has the greatest impact on trawl fisheries, which otherwise cannot operate. Removing government and taxpayer money from these economic and business sectors halt the expansion of large commercial fishing operations and significantly obstruct their ability to operate—and all it takes is a signature.

Follow this link to virtually sign your name to Greenpeace’s collaborative No Supertrawler campaign and encourage the Australian Government and AFMA to set a precedent for the rest of the world, and to say: No supertrawler. Not here. Not anywhere. Original Article can be found here.

Why this issue and petition is important?!

One of the world’s biggest fishing trawlers with a history of over exploiting fish stocks, the FV Margiris, wants to trawl for small pelagic fish – some of the most critical species in our marine ecosystem. Small pelagic fishing around Tasmania already has a bad record. The surface schools of jack mackerel that were once common off southeast Tasmania have not returned after the collapse of that fishery over 20 years ago.

The fish are a vital food source for important species like the critically endangered southern bluefin tuna, marine mammals, seabirds and game fish. Trawlers like this not only catch the target species, they also get tonnes of bycatch - unwanted marine life like dolphins, seals and seabirds, that gets thrown back dead.

This fishing trawler is the opposite of the fishing activities we need to ensure healthy oceans and healthy communities – we need better valued seafood that doesn’t rely on government subsidies, sustainable employment for local fishermen, science based fisheries management, and no unwanted by-catch.

Tasmania’s fishers are up in arms over the arrival of a Dutch super trawler, the FV Margiris. These boats are blamed around the world for overfishing and Tasmania’s anglers are convinced the super trawler will deplete local populations of fish and in doing so drive away the prized blue-fin tuna. Australia’s fishing regulator says the quota is based on sound science, and they say they’ll be able to effectively police the catch. So who’s right? Reporter: Wendy Carlisle

A surprise twist and beautiful outcome to this dog story (video)

Family Surrenders Pet to be Euthanized But Tearful Goodbye Moves Vet to do Surgery for Free

After their beloved dog fell on a spike, and home remedies only prolonged its suffering, the family decided to surrender the pet to the SPCA to be put down.

In a final goodbye, the family's father looked into Kayla's eyes, apologizing for being too poor to care for her and begged the dog to forgive him for his shortcomings.

After the family began coming to terms with their loss, two weeks later, they received the surprise of a lifetime.

The shelter was so moved by Frank Martinez's tear-filled goodbye, they decided to provide Kayla with the care she needed free of charge.

The Amazing Octopus! Did you know they build gardens?! (video)

The extraordinary, intelligent octopus wields tools, uses armour, and builds gardens!!! Two articles and videos showing the octopus doing just that! Second video shows a large octopus fighting a shark, and guess who gets off second best?!!

A tool-wielding octopus? This invertebrate builds armor from coconut halves.

A clever octopus made headlines earlier this year after it swiftly disassembled part of its tank at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium in California. But out in the open ocean its relative, the veined octopus (Amphioctopus marginatus), has upped the cephalopod intelligence quotient by using coconut shells as tools.

The dexterous octopuses were observed stockpiling discarded coconut halves, carrying them (with some difficulty), and later using the oversize pieces to build a protective armored covering, reports a team of researchers in Australia and the U.K. in a paper published online today in Current Biology.

But might the undulating invertebrates just be making use of found objects like an ant transporting food on a leaf or a hermit crab crawling into an empty shell?
These are true tool users, the researchers assert, placing veined octopuses in the rare ranks of birds, chimpanzees, humans and a few other mammals that put objects to more complex use. The invertebrates indeed purposefully collect, transport and then assemble the coconut shells for deployment only when needed (see video below).
"There is a fundamental difference between picking up a nearby object and putting it over your head as protection versus collecting, arranging, transporting (awkwardly), and assembling portable armor as required," Mark Norman, of the Museum Victoria in Australia and paper co-author, said in a prepared statement. "The fact that the shell is carried for future use rather than as part of a specific task differentiates this behavior from other examples of object manipulation by octopuses, such as rocks being used to barricade lair entrances," the researchers wrote in their paper.

And even though they boast eight flexible legs and handy suction cups, the octopuses face challenges in carrying these coconut halves. To do so, they flip the shells—which are larger than the octopuses’ bodies—so that the open side is up and grasp it underneath with the upper part of their legs, holding it above the ground and walking stiffly on the soft substrate—an "ungainly" process the researchers call "stilt walking."

Indeed, one of the distinguishing features of this behavior is that carrying the shells is not an immediate advantage—but rather a burden and even a danger, leaving the animal more exposed to predators. But the risk seems to be worth the reward.
"While I have observed and videoed octopuses hiding in shells many times, I never expected to find an octopus that stacks multiple coconut shells and jogs across the seafloor carrying them," Julian Finn, of the Museum Victoria in Australia and also a co-author, said in a prepared statement.

After spending some 500 diver-hours over the course of 10 years, researchers off the coast of Indonesia observed several veined octopuses engaging in this behavior, with four instances of the animals carrying the coconut shells as far as 20 meters.
"I could tell that the octopus, busy manipulating coconut shells, was up to something, but I never expected it would pick up the stacked shells and run away," Finn said. "It was an extremely comical sight—I have never laughed so hard underwater."

Building an octopus’ garden in the shade: Octopuses collect coconut shells and use them to create protective armor.

(Above article and video care of Scientific American - http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/2009/12/14/a-tool-wielding-octopus-this-invertebrate-builds-armor-from-coconut-halves/ )

The common octopus would be unique for its appearance alone, with its massive bulbous head, large eyes, and eight distinctive arms. But by far the most striking characteristic of the octopus is the wide array of techniques it uses to avoid or thwart attackers.

Its first—and most amazing—line of defense is its ability to hide in plain sight. Using a network of pigment cells and specialized muscles in its skin, the common octopus can almost instantaneously match the colors, patterns, and even textures of its surroundings. Predators such as sharks, eels, and dolphins swim by without even noticing it.

When discovered, an octopus will release a cloud of black ink to obscure its attacker's view, giving it time to swim away. The ink even contains a substance that dulls a predator's sense of smell, making the fleeing octopus harder to track. Fast swimmers, they can jet forward by expelling water through their mantles. And their soft bodies can squeeze into impossibly small cracks and crevices where predators can't follow.

If all else fails, an octopus can lose an arm to escape a predator's grasp and regrow it later with no permanent damage. They also have beaklike jaws that can deliver a nasty bite, and venomous saliva, used mainly for subduing prey.
Considered the most intelligent of all invertebrates, the common octopus is found in the tropical and temperate waters of the world’s oceans. They can grow to about 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) in length and weigh up to 22 pounds (10 kilograms), although averages are much smaller. They prey on crabs, crayfish, and mollusks, and will sometimes use their ink to disorient their victims before attacking.

Homeless Man's Dog Shot by New York Police Officer for Barking!

(update now below this original article) On Monday afternoon, in the midst of the crowded streets and sidewalks near Union Square in N.Y., police opened fire on a pit bull mix who was barking at passersby in front of a KFC restaurant.

According to the New York Observer, the dog was a regular fixture in front of the KFC. His owner, a homeless man, spent his days in the same location. Those who knew the pair stated that the dog was never a problem.

But today, the homeless man was passed out and the dog was barking - perhaps barking protectively because of his unconscious guardian.

A witness stated that the police tried to mace the barking dog and in response, the dog lunged.

The officer responded by pulling a gun and shooting the dog.

Unfortunately for the dog, and those with the misfortune of being in the area, the dog did not die quickly. Instead, the grievously wounded dog was writhing in pain on the ground as witnesses allegedly pleaded for the officer to put him out of his misery.

But the dog was not shot again...instead, he was left to die a slow, agonizing death.

Those people familiar with the man and his dog wonder who this officer was. They surmise that he must have been new to the area because the officers who typically patrol this area would know the pair - and know that they were not a danger to the public.

The Lexus project released a statement updating the public on Star the dog shot by a NYPD officer while she was protecting her owner Lech Stankiewicz.

Stankiewicz suffered an epileptic seizure leaving him immobile and lying partially in an east village street in New York, earlier this week.

Star survived the gun shot and was taken to Animal Care and Control (ACC) of NYC, but the public quickly became concerned about Star’s health and welfare after ACC remained silent about her intake. The public started questioning ACC’s motives for their silence, and Amanda Lewis and Sasha Sabbeth reached out to the Lexus project to help them get answers on the health and welfare of the now famous Star.

Lexus project released this statement about Star earlier today; “We know that so many of you are concerned, worried and outraged about Star. This is an update and although I know you want more but please respect this is all we are permitted to say at this time. Star is very much alive and receiving medical care and holding her own. We will update as soon as we are permitted to. Thank you for your support and understanding.”

The Lexus project was founded in 2009 after a high prey greyhound named Lexus was declared a vicious dog. Lexus sat on death row in a Rhode Island kill shelter waiting to be put down. Robin Mittasch read her story and asked her husband Richard Rosenthal, an attorney to motion for her release.

The Lexus project is now a law firm for dogs. They provide legal defense on a case by case basis for dogs they believe are improperly or unfairly facing dangerous dog designations or euthanasia.

With the Lexus project on Star’s case, the public may get some much needed answers.

Land of free speech until you say something they don't like...

This man has been arrested, not because he has hurt anyone, or intends to hurt anyone, but because he was holding two signs that talked about the corruption of banks! For this, in the "land of the free", he was arrested and his freedom was taken from him - in a country of "free speech" he was arrested, for speaking! Money not only talks, but only permits those to talk that agrees with it! Where are the basic rights of a human being to speak out?

United We Stand For Truth & Justice
Drop the charges against Pennsylvania’s Occupy movements David C. Gorczynski. He was arrested and charged with two felonies for holding two signs saying “You’re being robbed” and another that said “Give a man a gun, he can rob a bank. Please help stop this abhorrent cruelty towards dogs in the name of (pseudo) science!

Dr. Euishin Edmund Kim: Stop promoting dog meat as cancer treatment aid and prevention! (petition link below) - Please take action...

Dr. Euishin Edmund Kim: Stop promoting dog meat as cancer treatment aid and prevention!
PETITION TARGET>> Dr. Euishin Edmund Kim (The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center)
LINK: http://www.change.org/petitions/dr-euishin-edmund-kim-stop-promoting-dog-meat-as-cancer-treatment-aid-and-prevention

As a man of science and a Christian, it is very disappointing that you would promote dog meat for cancer treatment and prevention based on an observation of only 2 people. You have stated in an interview with the S. Korean Newspaper, JoongAng Ilbo, published on 6/23/2012 (http://joongang.joinsmsn.com/article/aid/2012/06/23/8175843.html?cloc=nnc) that you recommend dog meat to cancer patients undergoing treatment and also as a cancer preventative and that when you observed 2 cancer patients, one who ate whole bunch of dog meat had a better result from the treatment.

Over two million South Korean dogs are electrocuted, strangled, or beaten to death each year killed in the cruelest ways imaginable, because of the insidious myth that the more an animal suffers, the more tender and tasty the meat and that so-called medicinal properties will be enhanced. Medical doctors such yourself are recommending dog meat to patients as a health remedies for all kinds of illnesses without any real scientific proof to support those claims. Thousands of cats are also slaughtered for soups and "health" tonics. While the animal advocates within South Korea and around the world are trying to get the South Korean government to ban this horrific cruelty to the man's best friends, educated medical doctors such as yourself are doing disservice to the patients who are desperate and willing to try anything to relieve themselves of their illnesses. Dogs tortured, abused, terrified, sick, imprisoned in tiny disgusting cages and fed rotten garbage all their lives can not be good for anyone especially the cancer patients and this fact was exposed alreadly through South Korean consumer TV programs. Please retract your recommendation of dog meat as a part of cancer treatment and cancer preventative unless you can prove your claim other than the observation of 2 people.

While the practice of eating dogs and cats is not widely accepted in South Korea, it is crucial that the South Korean government ensure it is completely eradicated. Caring citizens around the world, including South Koreans, cannot remain silent as dogs and cats are beaten and burned to death for a tastier meal and suffer agonizing deaths.

As a respected person of science and medicine, please do your part in this critical issue by only making the claims that can be scientifically proven and help ban the selling and killing of dogs and cats for food and medicinal products. If not for compassion, than for the sake of your country's global image.

Sincerely,

Save these gentle creatures! Flying foxes in danger of culling!

Please sign this petition to help protect these gentle creatures. They do NOT need to kill the bats in Rockhampton! In NSW, they used heavy metal music to scare away bats from local parks and that worked! Why kill these poor creatures, simply looking for somewhere to live? (A task becoming harder and harder for them since their native food and roosting trees are being cleared at a frightening rate!)

Please help ban a cruel, sadistic fire torture of bulls in Spain!

Bulls deliberately set on fire and left to burn to death as part of the "Fire Bull Festival"! Please sign the petition at the link provided here

In Medinaceli, a picturesque town in the province of Soria, Spain, a "tradition" called "Toro Júbilo" brings shame on Spain. On the second weekend in November, balls of pitch (a sticky black substance made from tar or turpentine) will once again be stuck onto the horns of a bull and set on fire. The burning bull is called "Toro de Fuego" (literally "bull on fire").

The bull is then released onto the streets and can do nothing but run around in pain. The bull often smashes into walls in an attempt to douse the fire. The agony the bull must suffer is unimaginable. These fiery balls can burn for hours, and they burn the bull's horns, body and eyes and cause tremendous stress – all while spectators cheer and run around the victim until it dies a slow agonizing death. This practice serves nothing but to show the inhumanity of humanity!

Pig walks on two legs - See video!!!

"A pig who can walk on two legs has become a local celebrity in China. She is known by villagers as "Zhu Jianqiang" (Strong-willed Pig) after she was born with only two front legs and learned to balance on them well enough to walk.According to her owner, Wang Xihai, she was one of nine piglets born in a litter. He said: "My wife asked me to dump her but I refused as it's a life. I thought I should give her a chance to survive and unexpectedly she survived healthy."Several days after her birth Wang decided to train the two-legged piglet to walk by lifting it up by her tail. He said: "I trained her for a while each day. After 30 days she can now walk upside down quite well."Wang said since the birth of the pig, his home has been besieged by visitors. A circus even offered to buy for the pig for a large sum but Wang refused to sell. "She proved to us that no matter what form life is it should continue to live on. I won't sell it no matter how much the offer is." ♥
